The Suburbs is an exploration of the physical context in which I’ve grown up. Through time things have changed; I’ve grown and matured and have engaged in things which have brought me to the more conscious position I now find myself. I feel as though the suburbs have nurtured some aspect of my development in this way. Through the years I’ve wandered the streets, whether it be on a bicycle or on foot, engaged in dream-like conversations both with myself and with now lost friends. I’m fascinated by spaces – we grow and change, but spaces remain. They act as a natural canvas for beautiful, yet fleeting moments. In this way I find the suburbs quite foreboding – not in the sense of imminent threat, but in a sense of a personal estrangement from our previous selves. Through this ongoing project, I’ve tried to reconnect with the previous selves I’ve inhabited – the precursors to the current “Fynn”. In taking these photographs, I’ve walked strangely familiar back streets and shadowed paths – liminal spaces. These journeys have somewhat transcended their original meanings and have instead turned into something with a psychological value: I truly feel as though making these images has brought me home to myself. You’ll find a large chunk of me in each of these images. They’re a part of me; we’re interlinked. In the same way I’ll never be able to remove “the suburbs” from my psyche, these images will forever be part of my growing sense of self.
