“Before the blues arrived in the Mississippi Delta, it lived in the desert of Mali, West Africa, and was known by a different name.” – Ali Farka Touré
The March instalment of Sumthin Brown’s (Bonolo Mafoyane) residency titled Grazin’ in The Dusk features a tributary show dedicated to remembering and celebrating the late Mali multi-instrumentalist, singer and African Bluesman, Ali Farka Touré, who took the traditional music of Mali, the music of the Jeliya and the Kora, and applied it to the guitar to create something which resembled the Blues of the America Mississippi Delta.
From Mali Blues to Desert Blues, this is an exploration of the marriage between West-African folk music and folklore through song and poetry by Thailand-based music ensemble, Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band, Sona Jobarteh, Samba Touré, Habib Koité, Oumou Sangare, Ron Bankley, and many more.
